The following case study is a summary from our ebook, Anticounterfeit: A New Day Has Come.
NXP Semiconductors (NXP) was formed in 2006 and is a NASDAQ-listed company which employs approximately 24,000 people working in teams distributed across 25 countries.
Formerly a division of Philips, the company boasts more than 55 years of experience in manufacturing semiconductors for standard and high performance products. NXP has 250 patent filings per year and owns around 9,000 patents and 100 trademark families.
MIFARE, one of the sub-brands of NXP, produces a line of classic chips which have had to contend with counterfeiting problems for several years. Due to the large scale of counterfeits, NXP is suffering from missed sales in the market and reputational damage.
According to estimates by IHS iSuppli in 2012, the semiconductor industry on average faces around 1-3% counterfeit devices in the market, and the 5 most counterfeited devices represent a $169 billion in potential annual risk for the global electronics supply chain. These counterfeits mainly come from China but have a global spread.
The NXP anti-counterfeit team comprises 44 people who handle around 450 cases per year.
Upgrading to DH Anticounterfeit solution
Before adopting CaseMate, NXP used a complex system that depended on multiple applications, including: Outlook, SharePoint, X-Drive folder, and individual Excel sheets, as well as the React database for different purposes.
As a result, the team lost working time in explanation of information and manually updating all kinds of files NXP has. Moreover, the information was not stored in one place which is available to all involved people.
Upon introducing the CaseMate system into daily use, NXP could benefit from an on-demand overview of their entire anti-counterfeiting activities and results.
Information can be stored and used more efficiently and intelligently, allowing the organisation to pull together data from different sources, including the possibility of importing REACT standard database and other external partners, into a single, centralised IT solution.
Moreover, the functionalities and customer experience of the CaseMate system can be further improved and tailored to NXP’s requirements through future customisation.
Johan Hulshof, IP & Legal Counsel at NXP Semiconductors, was very satisfied with the results and said: ‘The DH Anticounterfeits system CaseMate enables our Anti-Counterfeiting Team to work together globally with all relevant case information in one place. The quality of our case handling has improved significantly leading to faster turnaround of cases. Further, the statistical information processed through CaseMate is very valuable for building and improving anti-counterfeiting and brand protection strategies.’
